Bronze Clad Lift and Slide Doors
Custom European Terrace Systems for Luxury Residential Projects
Bronze clad lift and slide doors are the most demanding specification we build — and the most rewarding. Solid wood frames on the interior, precision-formed bronze cladding on the exterior, and engineered European hardware capable of moving sash panels weighing 400 kilograms or more on a single finger.
At Chablais, we deliver custom lift and slide systems for projects where the standard sliding door is simply not enough — large openings, exposed coastal sites, historic estates, and contemporary homes designed for indoor-outdoor living without compromise.
What Makes a Lift and Slide Door Different
A standard sliding door rolls on wheels at the bottom of the frame. The seals drag against the track, the hardware wears, and weather sealing is always a compromise.
A true lift and slide system works differently:
– Turn the handle 180°, the entire sash lifts off its track
– The door glides smoothly on hidden carriages with virtually no friction
– Lower the handle and the sash drops back down, compressing weather seals on all sides
– The result is airtight performance, even on doors weighing 600+ kilograms
– Single panels up to 3.5 meters tall and 3 meters wide are standard
This is the European engineering standard for terrace doors. It is what makes the difference between a sliding door that works for ten years and one that works for fifty.
Built for the Most Demanding Specifications
Our bronze clad lift and slide doors are engineered for projects where performance cannot be compromised:
– Large spans — single sash up to 10.5 m² or 3.5 m height
– High loads — sash weights up to 600 kg standard, 800 kg on request
– Triple glazing available with U-values down to 0.7 W/m²K
– Multi-track configurations — pocket-sliding, corner-meeting, multi-panel stacking
– Coastal-resistant hardware with marine-grade bronze and stainless steel components
– Concealed drainage and engineered weather seals tested in extreme climates
– Compatibility with seismic and structural requirements for California and high-wind zones
Every system is fully custom — there are no standard sizes because luxury projects are never standard.
Where Bronze Lift and Slide Doors Make Sense
Bronze clad lift and slide systems are specified primarily for:
– High-end custom homes with terrace, garden, or pool openings
– Coastal estates where the bronze patina blends naturally with the environment
– Historic renovations where aluminum cladding would look out of place
– Contemporary architecture with full-height glazing and indoor-outdoor flow
– Projects with a 50+ year horizon, where lifecycle cost favors premium materials
– Estates where the door system is a defining architectural feature, not a commodity
For projects where a standard sliding door or a folding system fits the brief, we offer folding doors and sliding window systems as alternatives.
For Architects and Builders
We collaborate directly with architects and luxury builders across the United States and internationally. Our approach is straightforward:
– Direct technical communication during the specification phase
– Custom shop drawings coordinated with your architectural plans
– Hardware and finish selection support
– Integration with curtain wall systems, steel framing, or other façade elements
– Reliable production with managed shipping and customs
– On-site support during installation
For larger projects, we provide hands-on technical assistance from specification through to final installation.
Why Bronze Cladding
Bronze is not the obvious choice. It is more expensive than aluminum, heavier to ship, and requires more skill to fabricate. Architects and homeowners specify it for one reason: nothing else looks like bronze.
Unlike aluminum — which holds its color and stays static — bronze is a living material. Over time, exposed to air and weather, it develops a natural patina:
– First years: warm golden-brown
– Five to ten years: deeper bronze tones with subtle variation
– Long term: classic verdigris green, particularly in coastal climates
– No two installations age identically — the patina is shaped by orientation, exposure, and environment
This is part of the appeal. Bronze cladding ages with the building rather than against it.
Wood Species and Interior Finishes
The interior frame is solid wood, finished to your specification. Available species include:
– Mahogany / Sapele — rich, warm grain, the most popular choice
– Oak — classic European oak for traditional and transitional homes
– Teak — for coastal projects and exceptional longevity (see our teak windows guide)
– Larch — for contemporary architecture and Passive House projects
– Other species available on request
Factory finishes use Sikkens-grade water-based stains and paints, applied in multiple coats over an anti-fungal primer. The interior wood face can be matched to flooring, cabinetry, or other architectural millwork.
Hardware and Engineering
The hardware is what separates a luxury terrace door from a builder-grade product. Our lift and slide systems are built with precision-engineered components from Europe’s leading suppliers:
– G-U and Roto lift-and-slide gear — German engineering, multi-point sealing
– Forster systems for specific high-load configurations
– AGB and Maco hardware for handles, locking, and finishing
– Bronze handle sets matched to the cladding for a fully unified appearance
– Concealed multi-point locking with anti-lift and burglar-resistant configurations
Hardware specifications are tailored per project — for security, accessibility, automation, or aesthetic preference.
